GA tent location

Here are driving recommendations from Coach O’Hern.

Drive downriver along Kelly Drive from East Falls.  Get into the left lane as you approach Strawberry Mansion Bridge.  Kelly Drive will be closed for regatta traffic where Strawberry Mansion Drive heads up the hill into Fairmount Park.  Only boat trailers, school buses, and food trailers with their tow vehicles are allowed onto Kelly Drive at the detour.  You will not be permitted to travel any further on Kelly Drive and be detoured up into the park.  Park anywhere you can find that is legal near that end of the park.  There will apparently be NO monitored parking this weekend for the 1st Flick, so take care not to leave any valuables visible in your car in case anyone is looking for an easy grab and go.  It has unfortunately been known to happen.

Once you have parked, walk back down Strawberry Mansion drive to Kelly Drive, and head downriver along Kelly Drive.  In warmer weather, there are trails down the hill from the park directly to Kelly Drive, but I’m guessing they might be icy and treacherous now, so best to avoid them this weekend and walk a bit further. Wear warm but comfortable shoes or boots!

Very quickly, you will pass the Temple University Boathouse and come upon the parking lot of Gillin Boathouse, which houses St. Joseph’s University and St. Joseph’s Prep rowing programs.  It is in that parking lot that you will find the GA boats and trailer.  One caveat; this weekend, we may put our boats on the trailer from Mt. Saint Joseph’s Academy.  Their boats are purple and easy to spot!   It would be good for all novices attending to find their coach (boys find Lauren, girls find me).  We’ll very likely be near our boats and the boat trailer.

Walk another few hundred yards downriver from the Gillin Boathouse, and you will find the GA team tent. Our tents are black with the GA logo and thus hard to miss.  That is the place to hang out and meet other parents.  There will also be food there, and veteran parents can explain how tent set-up, food preparation, and so one work each week at a regatta. Please introduce yourselves and don’t be shy.  Our tent location is at the mid-point of the racecourse, and any coach or parent will orient you to the racecourse and other details of the locale.

The boathouse is on a three-acre riverfront property, just east and downstream from Conshohocken in Pennsylvania. This is 10 miles upriver from Boathouse Row in Philadelphia. The boathouse can be reached from the nearby major routes I-76 and I-476. The major bridge through Conshohocken, the Fayette Street Bridge, crosses from the southwest side of the river to the northeast side. The property is on Washington Street, parallel to the Schuylkill River on its east side and to the SEPTA R-6 regional train line on the other side. Please see the map below for general location and directions.
