Schuylkill Scoop

Getting to the Schuylkill for the Flicks, City Championships, and Stotesbury Regatta

The racecourse is on the Schuylkill River between Strawberry Mansion bridge and the Columbia bridge, upriver from Boathouse Row. (Map below.)

Race day traffic on Kelly Drive is detoured into Fairmount Park, where parking is available by the ballfields (see 2016 map) for a $12 fee (subject to change; Stotesbury $15).  For more information on parking go to http://www.phillyflicks.com/parking/

In order to continue the long-standing tradition of parent involvement in local high school regattas, the PSRA has contracted for additional parking, available in Fairmount Park by following the Kelly Drive detour. Monitored parking will cost $12 per day.

PSRA has contracted with a bus company to provide a shuttle from the parking lots to the Canoe Club and the Grand Stands. Buses are anticipated to run every 15-25 minutes (depending on traffic) from approximately 8 a.m. until sometime after the last race.

Golf cart transports are available at the entrance [rower drop off] to assist in the movement of items to parent tents.

A shuttle runs every 15 – 20 minutes between the river and the parking lots. Along the river, shuttles drop fans at either the Canoe Club (north – near GA’s tent) or the Grandstand at the finish line (south).

To find GA’s hospitality tent

We are located about 200 yards downstream of the St. Joe’s University/St. Joe’s Prep boathouse, and that is just downstream of the old Canoe Club/Strawberry Mansion Bridge. The tent is black and has a GA logo on it.

Cowbells, horns — cheer on the team!

Come enjoy the river atmosphere, watch the races and cheer!  BYO cowbell!

Regatta line-ups will be posted on this website a couple of days before the event.

Rowers are responsible for their own transportation. Rowers must arrive at the race course TWO HOURS prior to the time of their race.  Leave home early and allow for heavy traffic and the detour jam.  Rowers may be dropped off at the detour checkpoint, but parents must allow time for the detour into Fairmount Park, parking, and the walk back to the river.

Many drivers drop their rowers, passengers, chairs, etc. at the detour checkpoint. Some people bring roller blades or bicycles for getting around.

There is a path called Ormiston Trail that takes you to Kelly Drive and comes out near the location of the GA tent. Please note that there is a significant change in elevation between the river and the parking area.

A golf cart is available at the detour checkpoint that may take you to our tent (pending availability) if you have heavy items or have difficulty walking.

GA Crew Team trailer

Who will bring the trailer?

WHY YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER TO TOW THE TRAILER

NO PARKING is allowed on Kelly Drive in the vicinity of the regatta. Only Germantown Academy parents who volunteer to tow the trailer/set up/tear down the tent have access to the limited number of parking passes granted to our team by the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association. (Passes are divided among the PSRA member schools based on the relative size of their programs.)  For those with passes bringing the trailer, note that you must drive one-way , north to south.

The map below marks St. Joe’s Boathouse. The GA Tent is generally located just south. Cars are diverted onto Strawberry Mansion Drive north of this location.
